Manthrikan Review

Manthrikan’ is a flick that is all flat and generic that must have appeared not-so-good at the time of its conception. On screen, it looks and sounds even worse.

Mukunthanunni (Jayaram) is an ill-fated farmer whose business endeavours end up in failure. Unexpectedly, he has to take up the task of warding off an evil-spirit from a mansion where he also finds his love.

There is a blood thirsty spirit (Muktha George) on the loose at the Shenoy Mandir. The poor thing had spent years inside a weird looking pot and out in the open is on the lookout for a drink. The Shenoys run scared for their lives and invites sorcerer Mukundan Unni over to teach the ghost a lesson or two.

And the lesson is taught of course, not to the ghost, but to the hapless viewers and it goes thus. Never venture out for a film that suspiciously looks like it might be a hazy job. This is a film that disappoints you on multiple levels – as a comedy, thriller or a horror flick, it offers you nothing new.

Jayaram is his usual self, but seems to be doing the character sans any kind of involvement. Something seems to be amiss in his performance. Poonam Bajwa is just about OK while Muktha is good. Ramesh Pisharody is real unimpressive and his expressions give us the feel of a school boy uttering lines that have been learnt by heart.

Nothing much to say, except that the graphic work has been done convincingly well. It’s the faulty script that accounts for the messy state that the film is in. The writers should have done the script with utmost care, especially since he has got nothing new to tell here. The film ends up being neither a comedy nor a horror flick. Nothing much to say. Seems like Anil has lost his touch; he used to churn out decent entertainers earlier.
